Ben returned to Portland from a fantastic two-week trip to Spain this past weekend, and has an abundance of cool photographs to share related to physical therapy and exercise equipment for seniors. Europe is known for being more prevention-minded with regards to public health and disease than the U.S., and no where is it seen more than in the public parks around Spanish cities. Aside from soccer fields, basketball courts, and a tons of walking paths to encourage physical activity, many parks had whole areas partitioned for senior-specific exercise. Many of the pieces of equipment in the senior areas would be familiar to a physical therapy clinic in the U.S. – there were parallel bars, stairs, finger ladders, and even outdoor stationary bikes. Portland’s nine months of rain might make using outdoor exercise equipment a bit of a drag, but think how neat it would be!
